Google Play Store Monopoly Ending Now

Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Google in 2020, accusing the company of unfair practices and a monopoly on the Android App Store, charging a commission of 30% for any kind of purchase. A recent court ruling mandates that Google open its Play Store to competition for the next three years.

There is an ongoing battle between two companies that have been on top in their leagues, one is Epic Games, the largest games library and Google, well you all know what Google is.

We have to go a little back in time to know more about this. In 2020, Epic filed a lawsuit against Google over unfair practices on the Android App Store. They charge 30 per cent of the commission on everything, and the cherry on top is that they have a monopoly in the Android App Store market.

Google Play Store Monopoly Ending Now

The verdict for that has come out after like 4 years and the US District Judge James Donato was the one to deliver it. He mandated that the Google Play Store has to open competition for other players to enter the game for a period of 3 years and this has to be done within the time frame of 8 months from the date of release of this order. He also added that the other stores will have access to Google Play's entire app catalogue, with developers having the option to opt-out.

This ruling can be a very big change for the Android community as the developers and the users doesnt need to depend on the Google play store for their everyday use apps and can check for other options too.

After this Google has expressed its disappointment with the court by supporting that this strategy has worked very well for them for the past seven years. Google has appealed this decision already which is still pending with the court.

It looks like Google is being sued from every place possible, some places are investigating Google for its dominance in Digital Ad marketing technology, Europe is investigating Google's practices and many more.
